Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
